How We Work

At Independent Spaces, we are dedicated to supporting your independence within the comfort of your home. Our process is designed to provide personalised solutions tailored to your unique needs and goals.

We begin with a comprehensive assessment conducted in your home by our experienced occupational therapist.

This session typically lasts between 60 to 75 minutes and includes:

  • Evaluating Your Mobility and Transfers: Observing how you navigate your home environment.
  • Assessing Daily Activities: Understanding how you manage everyday tasks and identifying any challenges.
  • Reviewing Home Layout: Identifying potential barriers within your home’s access and internal arrangement.
  • Equipment Evaluation: Examining any existing equipment you use.
  • Goal Setting: Collaboratively establishing an action plan that aligns with your personal objectives.

If more complex solutions are required, such as seating assessments for wheelchairs or evaluations for home modifications, these will also be addressed during this visit with your consent.

Our Interventions Fall into Two Categories: Equipment and Home Modifications.

  • Equipment solutions are items that are portable and designed to help make particular day to day tasks of concern easier or safer for you and/or those caring for you. The inclusion of equipment aims to adapt or compliment the way a task is completed, with the aim to support your independence.
  • If we are unable to solve an area of concern or risk within your home with equipment solutions, we will assess whether something more permanent like modifications to the existing home may be appropriate. These are changes to the physical home environment that may present as an existing or future barrier or could be better adapted to support your safety.

At Independent Spaces, our commitment doesn’t end with recommendations – we walk alongside you through the entire process of putting your plan into action. Once your home modifications or adaptive equipment have been approved, our team works closely with trusted suppliers and contractors to ensure smooth and timely installation.

Our occupational therapists are available to provide follow-up support, including:

  • Training on New Equipment: We help you and your caregivers learn how to safely and effectively use any new assistive tools or modifications.
  • Adjustments and Fine-Tuning: If something isn’t quite right, we’ll revisit and adjust the setup to better meet your needs.
  • Ongoing Communication: We remain available to answer questions, offer troubleshooting, and provide further guidance as your needs evolve.

We believe that support is just as important as planning – our goal is to help you feel confident and empowered in your own space.

Our Services

Why Choose Us?

Wait times for publicly available community occupational therapy services can be lengthy. At Independent Spaces we have experience working with community dwelling adults and creating solutions to support them remaining safely at home and as independently engaging in daily tasks as possible. Manage risk of falls and related injury to support your independence and goal of remaining at home with loved ones.

If you wish for us to come by to meet you to complete an assessment to identify how we can best help, Independent Spaces come to you. We are experienced in assessing your home environment and how you function within this space.

This is our passion, and we would welcome the opportunity to work alongside you to ensure your home and all spaces within it are practical to meet your now and future needs. Following an assessment with Independent Spaces, accredited OT’s can then complete the applications for Ministry of Health/Whaikaha funding.

This means if eligibility criteria for funding is met, you will not be out of pocket for essential equipment and/or home modification solutions to support independence in your home.
